If students are lying about their racial/ethnic background or if this is because of people who don’t “look” their race (white Latinos, etc.), why aren’t we seeing similar demographics at other top schools? Harvard and Yale are closer to 40% white. Much lower % of Blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans than Hopkins. Seems strange that people would only lie to get into Hopkins!
💯
We would all need real data in larger quantities than publicly available to analyze this intelligently. As a thought experiment, one might wonder if those biracial kids who believe that emphasizing one side of their heritage would help with admission, would check the box for their non-white family origin. In my Gen X professional grad school educated circles, there are many families of mixed heritage. All high-attaining families but from grad schools that are not quite HYPSM level. One level down in school ranking if you are the kind of person that thinks that matters a lot. It seems very reasonable to me that children from these kinds of families would both target and be accepted at schools like JHU. And this could occur without diluting applicant or student quality.
For your assertion to hold, it would then have to be true that jhu uniquely receives and accepts more bi-racial kids who are academically strong vs other t20s That something at jhu makes it specifically more attractive to biracial kids than its peers Also, are you asserting t35 grad school alums ex-hypsm have a greater probability of being in an interracial relationship than t10 grad school alums ?
I do not have the data to have a factual, mathematical argument with you but if you will go on a thought experiment with me.... Biracial marriages are known to be increasing. Educated people marry people they go to school with. So, the less integrated or slower to integrate schools would probably have fewer biracial legacy couples. If you want to review the history of race distribution at the Ivies, I'm sure you can dig it up. Some of them didn't admit women until after I was born. Also, from my recent review of the current numbers...state flagships and non-Ivys are usually quite large in terms of student bodies compared to the Ivy Leagues. When you think of all the various educated student diasporas - India, Pakistan, China, Korea, Nigeria, Venezuela, and Brazil come to mind - particularly for grad school - they are interested in any good US school where they can get in. Because it's often quite difficult to get in as an international grad student. Do you not see how logical it is that there could be many more biracial couples who attended these larger schools of which there are a good many? Plus then assortative mating of grads from different schools? Next thing is good public schools. One point of good public schools is to give people who have socioeconomic disadvantages an equal chance to master the K-12 curriculum and compete for college. Doesn't the DMV have many of the U.S.'s top districts? OK, now on to whether there's something about the JHU applicant pool that is special. I would posit it's partly due to geography. If you live in the DMV and are on this board, you know what your larger multistate local community is like. Educated, affluent, multicultural, yes biracial, extremely affluent minorities of all backgrounds. Huge numbers of potential applicants. Don't most kids apply to local safeties/targets? Add in the school's strengths in higher-paying, quant careers and I can see a lot of interest coming from all quarters. I will admit some people might be lying. Shame on them. If you want to educate yourself, you can review the history of how the Ivy Leagues treated Jewish students. I have lived in four different geographies and the one with the highest percentage of Jewish people was in Maryland. I greatly enjoyed living there and being a neighbor broadened my horizons and appreciation for their concerns. If you told me that JHU was disproportionately admitting Jewish students then I would also not be surprised and I would not be upset and complain and look for reasons why Christians were discriminated against. As a mother of a white boy, I read now that boys are getting a bit of a bump because there's a wish not to let schools get too female. Not sure if that's really true but if so, that would be a shame. Bottom line, society is constantly changing the rules. If the rules aren't breaking in your favor, then you just have to work harder. And picking on people and making them feel unwelcome for their personal characteristics after they've been selected by a process they did not design is rude and harmful. There is a lot of evidence that suggests people of all types do better in school when welcomed, accepted, and treated with the expectation that they will succeed.
