Starting the process of elimination by figuring out which of the most reputable schools are even a realistic possibility and then going from there to determine fit. Why spend time on whether Williams is a fit or not, knowing it’s not an option? How is this not rational? Why does this make me a loser?[/quote]

I am not the PP and not calling you a loser.  An alternative way to look at this, however, is find the school that is the best fit and then look for a safety, target, reach in that category.  So, if Williams is the dream and totally out of reach, what is it about Williams that he liked (programs, size, location, etc.) and look for those characteristics in attainable schools.
