This the way a normal flight should work. Shades should always be closed for the bulk of the flihjt because it can raise the temperature a ton and it is very intense in peoles' eyes. It also ruins your ability to watch the TV screens in the seats. The fact that so many people in this thread do not know the basics of flying is shocking.

Exactly.  The sun can literally blind you if you climb mount Everest due to much higher intensity of UV rays at that altitude.  Your are way higher than that on a flight. Windows should be closed at cruising altitude, always.

The flight attendants almost always require people to close the shades during the bulk of the flight on virtually every single long haul international flight I've ever been on.

The one time a guy in the row in front had his share open for too long and the temperature must have risen by 20 degrees instantly, and people were sweating even with full blast cabin cooling.  The flight attendant made him close it.
