Nobody is forcing anybody to "compete". If you feel you have to compete it is a you problem, not a them problem. The people I know who have left this area because they wanted to raise their kids in a less competitive environment have seemed insecure to me. Instead of being happy with their home, they wanted bigger, nicer homes for less money. Felt obviously insecure if their snowflake wasn't the best on the team or the smartest in the class.
I don't feel like I have to compete at all. But I get tired of hearing people talk about it. I don't feel like sending my kids to enrichment and having tutors and doing resume building things at age 5. I also don't feel like listening to you talk about Kumon. So yeah, the competitive nature of the DC area can be annoying even if you're not competing to try to keep up with those people. As for your second comment, either that's true of the people you know or you didn't know them like you thought they did. The people who have moved to our city from DC or other bigger cities didn't do it because they were insecure. In fact, the opposite was true. And none of us care about our kids being on the best team or the smartest in their class.
