The "elite" are buying electric Volvos, BMWs, Lucids and ID.4 Pros, all equal to or more expensive than the cheap Teslas. If wanting to think you're "elite" is the issue (and you're stupid for thinking that's top of mind for many or most car buyers), anybody can achieve "elite" status without buying a bland Musk-mobile. On another note, I used to drive a Camry wagon my ILs gave us. Its styling was about as bland as a Tesla. [/quote] +1 Wealthy people aren't buying Teslas. They are buying Lucid, Rivian, other "prestige brands". Tesla is very middle class, maybe even lower middle class at this point. A Tesla Model 3 costs $20K less than a KIA EV.
