Why do drivers just sit in the left lane when they're not passing anyone? And why do drivers stop at traffic lights leaving 1-2 carlengths of space between their own car and the one in front of them? Particularly when it means I'm right behind them and can't get into the turn lane that's opening up right next to them?
Lack of experience. They are planning on turning left and change lanes in advance. And they cannot estimate the distance (in case of stopping at car length).
I do it because of training to keep enough distance in front of your vehicle that you can maneuver your vehicle out if need be. Remember the CIA shooting at Langley? I'll try not to do it by turn-lanes from now on though.
Yeah, I agree that many people simply are unable to estimate the size of their own car, but you are "supposed" to leave 1 car length between cars stopped at a light. You may be surprised to find out that traffic moves much more smoothly and that more cars will make it through a given green light if there is about 1 car length between stopped cars. A friend of mine modeled this during grad school (not as a thesis project, just cause he was a nerd). Ever notice how you start driving when the light turns green, then you have to hit the brakes cause you're too close to the car in front of you, then everybody behind you sees your brake lights, and so on and so forth.
