Does anyone actually want an elementary school at Blake Lane? It was very very opposed by the community.
The specific location was opposed by some in the community, and supported by others, but what you’re missing is that the money is now gone for good and it will be many decades before the Fairfax/Oakton area has the opportunity to reduce the enrollment at Mosaic (over 960 kids) or Providence (875 kids) again. Meanwhile a new school will get built at Dunn Loring, where it isn’t needed, in an area where the nearby schools are below capacity and some only have 400 or fewer kids. Only an idiot and a buffoon like Frisch could have come up with such a stupid idea, and only a school board composed entirely of members from the same political party could have failed to stop it. Shame on the entire school board for wasting taxpayer money.
I remember when he came to Shrevewood with his grand plan to reduce enrollment - parents were. PISSED. The school board had originally promised a boundary study in the fall of 2021 with changes implemented in the fall of 2022. Then Covid blew everything up and Frisch took advantage of everything to push his stupid school that nobody asked for through. I don't know a single Shrevewood family that is happy about this plan - for one thing, we don't need any changes now, our school is under capacity after Covid; and second, at the time, we needed/wanted immediate changes. Nobody wants a new school - all the schools that they would have moved our kids to were good schools (Stenwood & Freedom Hill). Now who knows what is going to happen with this new school that is like a mile down the road from Stenwood by the way.
Well said. It will be a total sh*t show.
Wasn't the Shrevewood PTA in total support of him? I heard rumblings that they did nothing to speak up against his plan at that meeting.
I think everyone felt blindsided. I was in the meeting, there weren't really any opportunities for people to ask questions, and when someone did, it was really glossed over, so I think people stopped. The PTA sent a letter to the board members protesting the plans and I don't think anyone ever responded. I know I personally (and many of my friends) reached out, as well, and never heard anything other than "we're doing this for you, isn't it wonderful?"
This exactly! Though I think people did expect the PTA to put up more of a fight but let’s be clear nothing would have changed so can’t fault the PTA. But the Shrevewoood principal has made an impact on enrollment through other avenues-for better or worse.
Shrevewood Enrollment Trends (September #s) 2017: 770 2018: 773 2019: 771 2020: 719 2021: 674 2022: 657 2023: 646 So the numbers were dropping even pre-Covid, and have continued to drop since Covid. Yet Frisch wants to spend $60M in taxpayer money to build a new school (reportedly 900-seats) in Dunn Loring to "solve" the problem at Shrevewood, when the Dunn Loring site is surrounded by other under-enrolled schools: Cunningham Park, Vienna, Freedom Hill, and Stenwood. When Shrevewood was over-crowded, there was a simple solution: move part of Shrevewood to Stenwood, and part of Stenwood to Freedom Hill. Now there will be a more complicated, expensive "solution," and it will create far more capacity that's needed in the Dunn Loring/Vienna area, while likely delaying a new school where it might make sense, either further west in Fairfax/Oakton, or further east in Tysons. The whole project should be scrapped and Frisch should be sent packing. The guy is a total moron.
Thank you for posting this data. I don’t know much (or anything, really) about this school, but that seems like a big drop in enrollment.
Two things happened to make enrollment decline: lots of people moved away and to Catholic during Covid and never came back and they switched to the cluster model instead of having a separate LLIV class which sent a lot of families to the AAP Center. I believe the Principal knew exactly what he was doing and what would happen when he made this change.
