Your kids all sound NII great. Those GPAs at a Big 3 are incredible and you should all be proud!
Here’s the issue with Big3 GPAs even 3.8+ … they don’t seem high when you have public school kids getting up to 4.5 — in fact, they seem low especially at the larger state magnets (Berkeley / UCLA / Michigan / UVA / Texas) where it’s impossible not be just a number. The Big3s will tell you that all the admissions teams at the colleges know how rigorous they are and what their grade ranges are but guess what: they really don’t — it’s impossible when reviewing hundreds or thousands of apps that ultimately start looking the same to keep that in mind even if you heard it once or twice in passing. Parents of Big3 kids need to internalize this, keep it in mind, and move on …
This year, every Big 3 is sending students to UC Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan, and UVA (who the hell wants to go to UT from DC?!?). None of these students have above a 4.0 because there are no APs/weighted grades at the Big 3 schools. What lie are you going to tell next?
But at our Big 3, the kids going to these schools are all hooked (in the case of UVA I'm adding in-state to hooked) - unhooked kids are not going to these schools.
At my Big 3, NONE of the admitted students who are attending in the fall are “hooked.” Btw, UC schools are not permitted to consider legacy/donor status in admissions. We also know that race cannot be considered at the UCs, and no DC Metro student lives in-state for California or Michigan schools. Finally, at my Big 3, none of the students attending the aforementioned schools are recruited athletes. It may be hard for some of you to grasp, but Cal, UCLA, Michigan and UVA continue to admit Big 3 students who are completely unhooked. It’s ok…you will deal. https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/current-issues/admissions#:~:text=Per%20long%2Destablished%20UC%20Regents,children%20of%20alumni%20or%20donors.
That's great that none were hooked at your Big 3. I never said anything about your Big 3 - I was referring to my own - and it absolutely is true they were hooked. (I won't say how as I am not going to refer to any specific student on a public forum). Why does this upset you? Your reality is just not the same as everyone else's. If I were you, I'd be thinking, "wow - if all the kids at that other school had to be hooked to get into these highly regarded state schools, I'm sure grateful that wasn't the case at my own school" - not spending time slinging attitude.
You’re the one who sounds upset. I’m very happy that my children attend a private school where unhooked and highly qualified students continue to be admitted to state flagship universities. My experience at my Big 3 school is different than yours. I’m as entitled as you are to share MY personal experience.
I'm not upset at all. I merely shared that all students attending those three schools from our Big 3 were hooked this year. There was nothing negative in my post. And you included this in your reply. "It may be hard for some of you to grasp, but Cal, UCLA, Michigan and UVA continue to admit Big 3 students who are completely unhooked. It’s ok…you will deal." Maybe you don't realize the tone? Or maybe you were replying to some other person, thinking my post was that person? Again - it's great those kids got accepted unhooked. But since the OP asked and this isn't just about one school, I am sharing that wasn't that case at all Big 3 schools this year (I'll also share that I think this was a change this year from what typically would happen at our Big 3).
From a 2012 Washington Post Article: "I was drawn to a page of the most recent Sidwell alumni magazine enumerating where the class of 2012 went to college. Some people have the impression that kids at schools like Sidwell all go to the Ivy League, but that’s not true. One of the most popular colleges among Sidwell’s 123 graduates this year was a state school, the University of Michigan, number 28 on the U.S. News list.. More Sidwell students (15) were admitted there than any other college sought by the senior class, and more (6) chose it than any other college." So, the question for all...do you think Sidwell's 2023 results were better, same or worse compared to 2012?
