We did a Hawaiian cruise which I would NOT recommend.  It was such a pain in the ass getting up super early every morning to catch a shuttle to the rental car place so that we could have a car for the day to travel around.  Yes, you could just do the onboard excursions but they're SO expensive and you're limited to what they want to show you.  We had our own ideas of what we wanted to see and the pace at which we wanted to move.  I think the only excursion we paid for was the luau which was awesome.

The whole time we were there, we just kept saying how we want to come back and just chill in one location and use a rental car to drive elsewhere if there were other places we wanted to see.  My brother in law rented a house on the north shore for a few days prior to the cruise.  It was right there on the water.  We could walk out the back door and snorkel and even saw a giant turtle come up on the sand to lay her eggs.  My family rented a condo in Waikiki for the few days prior to the cruise.  We drove out to various snorkeling places, walked to the beach, checked out Pearl Harbor, etc.  It was awesome.[/quote]
