Some children are not very adaptable and/or some parents find it difficult to parent when traveling far. I think it's totally fair for OP to go on his own. But part of being a good and supportive partner is putting plans in place to make that easy/feasible for his wife, in this case something like having a reliable babysitter to assist with childcare.
