Regarding the undergrad schools, select based on major and on location. We all know the US News rankings, but all three are solid universities socially & academically. (But, if one is targeting elite management consulting or investment banking, then Northwestern is the best option.)

The Fiske Guide To Colleges 2023 awards four (4) pens to Vanderbilt for academics , 4.5 to WashUStL, and the full 5 pens to Northwestern for academics. However, Vanderbilt & WashUStL score a bit higher than Northwestern for "quality of life" and a bit higher for "social life". Social life is an indication of drinking/party school status so being ranked higher in this category could be a positive or a negative depending upon the student.

Between Vanderbilt & Northwestern, there is a difference in academics, while the difference in academics between WashUStL and Northwestern is less. Probably means less stress at Vanderbilt & WashUStL.
