OP here. For those that thinks this is hilarious... I never said I was going to intervene, but I stand by my opinion that this was too harsh of a punishment. I do agree she should be reprimanded, but I think this was too much. I do not know who gave her this punishment, but it wasn't her teacher. Her teacher wasn't even at lunch. I do NOT think my child is perfect and I do want her disciplined, but considering the issues this school has, a harsh punishment for one of their generally well behaved kids is so narrow minded. There's literal violence that gets punished less in that school and I got talked down to by the principal for asking why there's little to no consequence when my child got whacked with a chair last year but whatever I guess.
Of course you stand by your opinion. So, if the lunch lady said five times "we need two minutes of quiet to explain X" and after attempting that says "Those who continue talking will have to have a lunch period alone..." Children continue talking. Lunch lady says, Child 1, 2 and 3, I'm sorry but you will be having lunch alone tomorrow." You're right. That's way too much. ;)
Omfg what is there to explain in such length during lunch by the admins or the lunch lady. The kids are eating!!!! Leave them be. You put these ridiculous rules on little kids and then are shocked when they can’t or won’t follow them. Get over yourselves. It’s school not prison. My child is in HS now but when he was in K he had a teacher who took away his water in the morning a couple of times for minor BS like this. I let it slide a couple of times but the third time I emailed the teacher and told him “he is NOT to take away water in May.” F that noise. Learn better classroom management techniques and don’t be a sadist.
You apparently have no idea what it is to be responsible for 24 kindergarteners in a class or to be one of 3 adults watching 200 kids at lunch. We aren’t going to let repeat behaviors slide because we can’t spend all our time watching your one kid.
Frankly, teachers should give the kids each their iPads or computer to use during lunch and “let them be kids” the way parents “let them be kids” when they take them to restaurants. I see kid after kid on an ipad in a restaurant because otherwise they are “being kids” annoying the parents. Up the game: take away all the adults in the restaurant and add in 122 kids that aren’t yours and that is the school cafeteria. OP- you handled it great it may be a BS punishment, but make your kid do it. Also understand that the WORST time of day in a school for adults is school lunch. We can barely hire for the job.
Yes because a cafeteria where children are with their friends and have their food right in front of them for all of 20 minutes is exactly like a restaurant where you spend over an hour with half the meal spent sitting and waiting.
Just think about this next time you go to a restaurant with your kids. What are you teaching your child about communal eating and how children should be expected to behave? If you want to justify your anti-social parenting choices, you have done so! Congrats! But know you are always laying the groundwork. So if you choose to send the message that a child should not have to wait for food or for others to eat or that a child cannot wait without a device, that is the behavior you are reinforcing by giving the iPad at a restaurant. You are NOT teaching social skills, you are teaching instantaneous individual gratification or the social skill of conversing or playing games while waiting.
