The Whitman debate team incident is one example of how the disciplinary policies are failing. The perpetrators were suspended from the debate team for a month. They should have been kicked out!
Those students didn’t just engage in hate speech; they named fellow students they wanted to kill and described how to do it. Why does MCPS have a policy that allows such behavior to result in a temporary suspension from an extracurricular activity?! That’s beyond the pale.
I think if a student wore a MAGA hat to class the punishment would be more severe (I'm being facetious here, I don't think there is any punishment for political satire in class but I could be wrong). My point is I wish there was consistency, its appropriate to stop Trumpism hate crimes but the goal is to stop all hate. No one should get a pass else the haters will just migrate to the side that condones their hate.
Oops, I meant to write political attire, not 'satire'.
