I do think that pre-meds are usually better off not going to the most competitive college they can get into because that makes it more likely they will get weeded out of the pre-med track. Just think, some kids are inevitably weeded out of pre-med at MIT and Cal Tech. Likely those kids would have stayed pre-med at Virginia Tech and now they would be doctors and no one would care where they went to college. It's like that old joke: Question: what do you call the person who finished last in their med school class? Answer: Doctor It is a bit of a gamble though because some kids would have been weeded out of pre-med (or just changed their minds) no matter where they went.
