I don’t understand what desire rests inside most people that makes them unable to accept that it could simply be mental illness. People seem to need for it to be external—like they need someone to blame. Is it about needing to feel in control?
There is no such thing as “simply mental illness.” Mental illness is not a chemical imbalance or a messed up gene, often our mental issues are direct results of the things that happen to us. PTSD is a good example. It is a mental disorder, but it was caused by something external. With depression, another mental illness, the most common causes are loneliness and a lack of control over environment. Just because something is a mental illness doesn’t mean it has nothing to do with the environment.
Bipolar disorder, however, is most certainly biological. They often have a reaction to SSRIs. It's not merely I'm sad about a divorce or hypervigilant and irritable after trauma.
