If people are scheduled to be at work at 9am Wednesday, they’re less likely to be out protesting (with potential for things to go off the rails) in the wee hours of Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Friday night, people often stay out late because it’s the start of the weekend, the. There’s a whole weekend for protesting and possibilities. I’m hopeful that the way it’s being handled so far will let people feel heard and hopefully everyone stays safe. [/quote]

As horrific as this video is described to be, and as often as crimes like this are swept under the rug, I'm guessing it's going to enrage and motivate a lot of people to want to bring about change.

Having a college degree makes you better able to take in a lot of information and make good decisions. It means you've been exposed to people outside your little town and ideas that different from yours. It makes you more comfortable with people who are different than you.

A lot of police departments will actually turn people away with IQs they deem too high. It makes them less pliable. But maybe we should stop arming and giving power to the power hungry idiots among us?[/quote]

The benefits of a college degree are good in theory, but there really is no correlation between a college degree and being a good cop. They would be better off increasing the academy length from 4 months to at least a year. That way they could train officers in skills that are relevant to the job. As it stands now, officers completing their field training have no idea how to do the job. It takes at least a year in a moderately busy precinct to figure out the basics of the job. Look… I am 100% against police brutality, but let’s not exaggerate. There are over 3,000,000 Americans and fewer than 1,100 were killed by police last year. Most who died were armed. The countries you are referring to also don’t have our tremendous amount of weapons on the streets. You’re comparing apples to paper clips. [/quote]

I’m the PP. You completely misconstrued my words. Of COURSE deaths aren’t “acceptable,” but I understand that they are sometimes unavoidable. Only 83 of the 1,110 people killed by police in 2021 were unarmed. These numbers are out of a population of 331 million. OF COURSE some of these were avoidable and are examples of dreadful policing, but many were the unavoidable.

I would love to live in a utopia, but I live in a nation with more guns than people. You say officers kill “for no reason.” I’m simply saying that, while we have an example today of that occurring, it is not the “routine” occurrence that a PP said it is.

So there you have it. I can despise what happened on that video. I can despise police brutality. I’m also able to see that it isn’t “routine.” Saying so doesn’t make me cold and uncaring, as you suggest. [/quote]

That video had nothing to do with guns. He was unarmed and they knew it because they didn’t shoot him. They held him down and beat him. Shame was the appropriate word that mother used. So shameful that this is who we are as a country.[/quote]
