Would better prep have done these kids a disservice? I went to an Ivy as a person of color on massive financial aid and really struggled there in my first two years. Most of my classmates were clearly far better prepared than I was, coming from a public school ranked in the bottom 25% in my state, from a county without GT programs. Without a lot of tutoring and late nights in libraries on weekends, I would never have graduated. With SATs in the 700s, I thought I was all set for college. Far from it. I wouldn’t wish the experience on my worst enemy. Banneker grads take note.
This. Lots of stories of kids from subpar or poorly performing schools who get into a good, competitive college, not even an Ivy, who really struggle once faced with more competition from kids coming from more rigorous schools.
From schools like Eastern, sure. But Banneker? Is there any evidence that these kids are underperforming? They don't have test scores like TJ because they don't have an admissions process that only takes very high-scoring kids, but that doesn't mean the school isn't rigorous.
