Would better prep have done these kids a disservice? I went to an Ivy as a person of color on massive financial aid and really struggled there in my first two years. Most of my classmates were clearly far better prepared than I was, coming from a public school ranked in the bottom 25% in my state, from a county without GT programs. Without a lot of tutoring and late nights in libraries on weekends, I would never have graduated. With SATs in the 700s, I thought I was all set for college. Far from it. I wouldn’t wish the experience on my worst enemy. Banneker grads take note.
This. Lots of stories of kids from subpar or poorly performing schools who get into a good, competitive college, not even an Ivy, who really struggle once faced with more competition from kids coming from more rigorous schools.
