Now, if you are a normal family attending a normal college the following things actually matter

1  What companies are within a 25-50 mile radius of the school, most national prestige companies won't be recruiting 
2. What majors/fields of studies do these companies hire

The main reason why there is a student loan debt crisis is because the vast majority of college attendees do not attend top 25 schools and major in things that companies are not looking for.  These college graduates end up making salaries in the 30s/40s which frankly could be gotten without going to college for 4 years and racking up debt.
