NWIH I want the doctor with the highest GPA, highest MCAT, and most prestigious residency to treat me or mine when there's a serious, life-threatening medical issue.
I don’t necessarily care about my doctor’s MCAT scores. I care that they did well in their program, they are open minded and a creative thinker who will diagnose and treat an unusual problem, are up to date and intellectually curious about their field, they have the skills, and that they are empathetic and compassionate. I don’t care at all what race they are.
So many people do though. So many women will actively seek out female doctors. So many AA patients will actively seek out AA doctors. It’s common to want a practitioner that is ‘like’ you.
I think women seek out women and AA seek AA because they feel underserved or unseen by people who aren’t like them and the research bears it out, I believe. I am a white women. I do prefer a woman practitioner based on past life experiences, but I am race agnostic and have had various doctors of all races. I’ve not had any experience that would suggest that for me race matters. I think some folks may have cultural reasons for wanting a doctor who understands their culture.
