The sad thing is that these teachers are ONLY thinking about Covid.... and its very minimal risk to children. They are not considering all the other risks to children by not having schools... depression, suicide, lack of reporting child abuse, and so many other consequences of closing in-peron learning. It is very shortsighted and they are not doing what is best for kids. [twitter]https://twitter.com/DLeonhardt/status/1478351892463984641[/twitter]
The sad thing is parents are confusing teachers with social workers. Their job is to educate not to make sure your children are not suicidal at home. I believe that falls under parenting.
Oh, dear God. Nobody said teachers are to make sure children are not suicidal. You have totally missed the whole concept. School is as much social learning for children as it is for academics. There are consequences to a child's mental health when you essentially lock down children in their homes, forcing them in front of a screen for 4, 5, or 6 hours a day. Hell, just a year before Covid experts were telling parents to LIMIT screen time - now teachers are telling them to FORCE the children in front of the screen for hours at a time. We know that remote learning is NOT working for the vast majority of children - particularly minority children and children who come from poverty. These Chicago teachers are totally ignoring the science regarding Covid, the statistics around Covid, and the detrimental effects of not having children in schools. Hopefully the parents in Chicago can find alternatives to public education for their kids and not have to continue to suffer the effects this union is forcing on them. It's a damn shame when unions are running the schools. (And, where is Joe "the union guy" to call out these teacher's unions?)
