One could easily argue that finding a new way to look at a problem and applying a concept originally instead of speding a lot of time on a brute force way is one aspect of mastering mathmatics, and even what makes math rewarding. I agree that having fun with math is probably the most important aspect of a program on the long term, and if your kid loathes it, don't even bother, plenty of other resources outthere and I'm sure you can find something that clicks.
