I went to high school in the late 90s and crop tops were in style then but they were banned by our dress code.
I went to high school in the mid 80s. Crop tops were in fashion then too. Banned at school. Shorts weren't allowed either, and this was in the south where it was hot pretty early in the year. No tan tops either, for boys or girls. Looking back I guess it was a fairly strict dress code (by today's standards) but it seemed fine then and we somehow managed to be fashionable. (judging by the awful 80s pics for "best dressed" )
When my husband went to high school in the deep south (any further south, and you'd be underwater), he wasn't allowed to wear shorts, and the schools didn't have air conditioning. I just checked that high school's dress code now: they have uniforms, girls (but not boys) have to pass the "fingertip length" test, shirt length is regulated (not too long, not too short), the only piercings they allow are normal ear piercings, no flip flops, Afros may not be longer than 3 inches, beards are not allowed, hair in "unusual colors" is not allowed... A good indicator of the school's priorities, in my opinion, and I don't mean it as a compliment.
