Eh, I think we are cognizant that most of the attacks on teachers and teachers’ unions are rooted deeply in sexism (and in DC) in racism. It’s sad to see how women so quickly took up the rhetoric of the patriarchy. If the mayor had wanted schools open earlier, she would have prioritized schools over bars and restaurants and vaccinated teachers first, renovated schools, opened up excess buildings, and generally supported schools to open as quickly as possible. The science has evolved as we learned more - you can’t blame teachers for not trusting DCPS and not wanting to go back to an unventilated building pre-vaccination.
Ha! This is all 100 percent nonsense. Coronavirus levels in August were so low in DC that coronavirus was practically nonexistent. Every major medical association said it was safe for schools to reopen. So daycares opened. Private schools opened. Public schools almost everywhere outside the DMV opened. Bowser wanted public schools to reopen too but teachers refused to do their job because WTU saw an opportunity to turn the pandemic into an extended paid vacation, everyone else be damned. No one is going to forget what WTU did to their families.
