Tufts reminds me more of W&M than UVA. It's the level just below Northwestern, Duke, JHU. I think of it as comparable to Georgetown and USC, maybe a half-step above BC. Excellent choice if your kid is interested in IR/foreign service.
William and Mary is not on any of those schools level. Tufts is a bit below Georgetown maybe on USCs level as USC is a bit overrated.
Your ratings are about as good as your use of possessives.
Sure you must have a DC at W&M . W&M is a BU maybe BC type of school. It is not prestigious/top tier like the other schools (sans Tufts) are typically typecasted as.
I don't have a child at any of these colleges. But IMO (and experience, in my capacity on hiring committee of my firm) W&M has always been as well regarded as Tufts - and I think the comparison the poster makes is a good one since they are both medium sized colleges with some LAC-ish features and an academically intense student body and small sports emphasis. In recent years, Tufts has become more competitive for admissions - likely there are a number of reasons behind that, a major one being its location. But the simple fact that the admit rate is lower for Tufts than W&M doesn't make Tufts a better college, academically or holistically.
