She kept in contact with me, and I was "ok" with that because she was nothing but fantastic to me. 
I cut(changed my phone number)  communication with her when I got that feeling that my ex was texting me from his mom's phone on her behalf to find out what was going with my life.

Op, he's desperately (and immaturely) trying to get her (ex's) attention. They did not break up that long ago. And from your post, it doesn't look like it was a contentious breakup. SO there is a high possibility that they will get back together.

You will have to literally fight and put in a lot of work to get him over his ex. Is the Instagram guy that worth it?
