This is a bad play for WTU. I'm pro union in general, but you have to play your cards better than this. You're going to lose what little parental support you have left.
It’s odd that parents on this forum think this. They have tons of parent support, just less from white ones or the more wealthy ones.
Actually true. 6 parents forwarded their emails to me about my kids’ school reopening plan. They felt that the plan was not safe and cited sealed windows, broken hvac, the neighborhood being a major hotspot with many kids invited to come back that actually have parents with covid right now (coughing in the background). One parent forwarded her email which was in Spanish asking why she has to send her son back because she felt it wasn’t safe -she is clearly confused but has not even heard back yet!!! This forum is such a departure from the reality for the majority of parents in DCPS. However it is true the loud wealthy white parents with extra time complain the most and tend to be the only voice heard. I’m tired of white folks speaking for our black families and don’t even listen to the black parents in their class. They dominate conversations and complain. Our families have been impacted by covid and yours haven’t in the same way. I strongly am against a plan that cries virtual learning for 75% of DCPS and accommodates whinny white parents.
oh stfu. the majority of the kids going back are black and latino. you should be busting your *ss trying to work with disadvantaged parents to get their kids back in school, whatever needs to happen, instead of reflexively deeming what white parents want as “racist.”
Pp I’m not a teacher. Why would I encourage kids to get to school ASAP. Also they are doing fine from my perspective virtually? I’m not going to encourage other parents one way or another. That’s their choice. Also we put close, our lids have been cohosted for three years now. There are legitimate building concerns that impact safety. We had several covid cases last week in the building. Parents in our kids school have died from covid. And one kid ended up with misc c last year. I understand why teachers are scared because it’s the same reason I won’t be sending my kid in. Our school isn’t ready. I appreciate the efforts of the WTU but also it is our burden As parents to fight for some these issues. Every school is different. And the wotp schools have built trust and daughter whereas other schools have been relying on bandaids and the sheer energy of the folks working to close the gaps. It won’t be sufficient in this case. A bad reopening could devastate our community. With crappy DL while kids are at home tending to covid + parents with new teachers. Some schools need to go back to the drawing board with their reopening plan.
