Govt worker from Michigan here, and yes, it's a different culture in DC from Detroit.  But it's different more from a perspective of having a faster pace of life, more work-centered culture, and as already discussed ad naseum in this thread, a much higher cost of living.  I don't get what you're saying about the whole "suspicion" and the "dinner" thing (I've been invited to dinner lots of times in Michigan...  :lol: ).  I mean, yes, it's different, but Detroit is not Mars.
