LOL. ECNL, they certainly win the marketing award for “highest level soccer.” Perfect fit for this forum.
I look at the travel for weekend games and there is no way in h*ll that I'll bring my boys to a Club going to ECNL. The thought of going to the Carolinas for weekend games is just plain awful. Sitting hours upon hours in the car and traffic. No thanks. I don't care how elite they make it sound. I am not 'aging soccer dad' from the other thread because I have a U14 and U11, but I played as a kid and have older nieces and nephews and experienced the same cr*p about 'the next big thing/league' every 1-2 years. It is ridiculous. I get so pissed about what they have done to youth soccer. And, the 'you don't have to do it, go play rec' people I would like to punch in the face. Youth soccer has effectively destroyed the rec program. Nobody is left in rec soccer. You have kids that don't show up, don't know basic skills and it's dangerous to put an older kid that knows how to play with kids that can't even control their body movements and don't know how to tackle. You get your ankles hacked and feet stepped on, etc. It is no fun if you are a skilled player playing at such a low level. So--you have to pay to play at some level and even C-D level teams at the older ages don't possess enough skill so at you will be driving. EDP is about the only thing I've found to avoid super long trips.
LOL at the "punch in the face" comment, that's me with about 40% of the conversations I have with coaches, TDs, parents. The need to latch on to some acronym is shameful whether it's DA, ECNL, blah blah, then you have the pissing match between US youth soccer and US club soccer. None of this crap benefits the kids directly, but the clubs get richer. How about you take that sponsorship money you get from plastering company names across jerseys that I HAVE TO STILL BUY and cut the cost down on fees. Go ECNL and travel for as far as you want, but let's think logically. Can we do 2-3 of the NC games in the same weekend, can we rent buses for kids....and parents. Stream the game? So much can be done to offset the ridiculousness of travelling for an hour game. DA is dead...and my predictions is that clubs will all go to ECNL, they will redo the regions, EDP will pick up much of the left over slack, and DA will convert to a MLS only league and US Soccer will have to change to meet MLS demands.
ECNL is diluting its own brand with its expansion and allowing clubs to place two teams in the league. having a B team incur the same expense and travel is a recipe for disaster and a will be exposed for the money grab that it is. Clubs will make money hand over fist, which is why they are going along with it but in the end ECNL loses its credibility as a showcase league.
