What if a student is well behaved, takes school seriously, but is a first-generation American, or arrived in this country as a child. That student, who may also be at-risk or economically disadvantaged, may well score a high-3 on PARCC ELA in 7th grade but be perfectly capable of succeeding and contributing to SWW or Banneker. Would you shut them out of every application high school in the city?
No. If I could, I'd tutor them like mad, and provide them and their families with other forms of support, until they could work at or above grave level.
Ok but since you cannot tutor them, and DCPS doesn't provide that sort of support, this kid has to fend for his/herself? That's nuts. Not sure why everyone is so worked up over PARCC being the gateway for the Walls test. This is LITERALLY the first year that's been the case. For all you know, kids with 3s, and perhaps even 2s, have been admitted for years.
I'm done with this shrill thread, which has been hijacked by frustrated sounding Shepherd parents. Wish you'd start your own thread. I'm just glad that my kid is heading to Stuart Hobson for 6th grade if we're not lucky in the Latin lottery. From what I understand, at Hobson, students have to score 4s and 5s on PARCC, and/or 3s and 4s on a DCPS 5th grade report card, to access 6th grade honors classes. Simple system, works for us with a child who coasted through elementary without breaking a sweat but brought home great report cards, and PARCC scores.
Please read again, this thread got hijacked by frustrated prospective new north parents, and SP parents started defending their position. Too bad this happened I was actually watching this thread to know of potential options for my kid who is neither going to SES or New North!
