I always thought the strangest thing about Charlotte’s character was that she was part of that friend group at all. She never really fit well with Samantha or Miranda. Yes Carrie was the glue that held them together but you could see Samantha & Miranda being able to get along on their own. Not so with Charlotte. She was too stuck up and prissy for them. Irl would someone like Samantha or Miranda give Charlotte the time of day? No.
Yes! It never made any sense that Charlotte was a part of their group. She wasn’t really close with any of them individually and weren’t they all condescending towards her anyway? I can’t imagine Charlotte and Miranda getting drinks by themselves.
I think the only way the Charlotte character works at all is if you conclude that, underneath her very pretty and put-together exterior, she is an absolute mess of anxiety and insecurity. That's why she sabotages every relationship by nit-picking the guy and that's why she hangs out with a group of women she has nothing in common with, simply because one of them was ... what? her roommate in college or something? Again, I think--to the extent the character makes any sense--that's why the relationship with the not-hot Jewish lawyer works for her, because he just totally breaks down the anxiety and insecurity because he's completely foreign to the world that was driving her nuts. There's a similar dynamic on Girls, but they are much more honest about it there, with the characters (irritatingly) asking each other why they hang out when they really have nothing in common and don't even like each other very much. It's because they are all too messed up to go and find new friends that they have something in common with.
