I’m going to chime in that I am voting against Jealous mainly for the ridiculous idea of Universal preK! I hope people give this more thought before assuming it’s the best idea. Honestly, MCPS can’t even accommodate the students that is currently has. Our MS has class sizes in the 30s. Our 5th Grade Compacted Math class has 35 kids in one classroom. There are no extra classrooms where MCPS can accommodate 4 years olds for preK. Also, we are at a Title 1 school and see the kids who have gone through the current Head Start program. It’s great in theory, but the kids are still behind in K-2nd grade. It certainly doesn’t seem to be a good ROI. Make class sizes smaller and MCPS more efficient and then I can get behind Universal preK.
+1,000+
I’ll tell you where the classroom space is. It’s in the school, moving more kids in the upper grades to trailers. My kid is on year 2 of being in a trailer. THIS!!!! I'm a liberal, but there are so many needs in the existing school system, how are they going to fund universal pre-K? I would rather them add another teacher to my child's Kindergarten class of 27. That would help kids more than a year of pre-K. Put the staff and resources where it matters. More staff in the EXISTING Kindergarten could accomplish a lot- more than a year of pre-K. Smaller group instruction for reading and math, facilities improvements, more school counselors. Kids are already in trailers at some schools, where is the classroom space for this pre-K? Universal Pre-K sounds like a great campaign line, but everyone needs to think a little harder about this and what would be given up so all 4 year olds can have a year to learn the alphabet and share.

I don't know if I'm Liberal or Conservative... I'm just old and crotchety but like to think I can see two sides or more to an issue. What I don't understand is what exactly has Jealous accomplished? He seems to be a profession racebaitor. Seriously the NAACP is but a shadow of what it used to be. Plus look at Baltimore, crumbling schools, decimated police, rising crime... Jealous has vociferously advocated for the policies that have nearly destroyed Baltimore. Why would we want that for our state... why would we want MoCo schools at risk to look like Baltimore schools? Hogan aint great but he's got my vote because not great is much better than worse.
I'll bite. What Jealous has accomplished: a partner at Kapor Capital, Board Chairman of the Southern Elections Fund[3] and one of the John L. Weinberg/Goldman Sachs Visiting Professors at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School. University of Oxford Columbia University What hogan has accomplished: In 1985, Hogan founded Hogan Companies BA from Florida state.
