OP again. No, she has not seen The Wizard of Oz. My seven-year-old saw it when he was five and it terrified him. He’s also imaginative but very very easily spooked.
OP, the answer is obvious. Your 7 year old saw the Wizard of Oz and learned about the tin man, and rust and it terrified him. He is very imaginative and made up some kind of story about the Tin Man living in a closet and shared that story at some point with your 3 year old, who is also very imaginative. The whole "there's a monster in my bed, if I stay under the covers he won't get me" is primal. Ask your 7 year old what kind of stories he's been sharing. When I was 7 and my brother was 4 I told him about he marshmallow monster.
This. Kids pick up TONS of things from the people around them without us even realizing it. It's what they are programmed to do. Adults have learned to tune things out, kids haven't. For example, when we go outside, my kid hears dogs barking from blocks away. I've completely tuned it out until she mentions it, then yea, I hear the dog, too. They just overhear things that we don't and repeat it later on. We just freak out when one of those things is creepy or coincidental in some way. Add in the very primal fear of sleeping alone and imaginations run wild. When my husband is out of town, I also "see" things. It's not spirits or demons or whatever, it's that I'm more afraid and amped up, so my brain perceives there is more potential for danger and starts looking for danger in everything as a protective mechanism.
