From http://www.electronicproducts.com/News/Engineer_vs_engineer_Who_has_the_higher_IQ.aspx Average IQ Profession 130 Physics 129 Mathematics 128.5 Computer Science 128 Economics 127.5 Chemical engineering 127 Material Science 126 Electrical Engineering 125.5 Mechanical Engineering 125 Philosophy 124 Chemistry 123 Earth Sciences 122 Industrial Engineering 122 Civil Engineering 121.5 Biology All of the top smarts professions (except for philosophy) are science/math/engineering (econ is all math).
There's only 8.5 points between the top and the bottom of this list. That's hardly definitive proof that one is smarter than another (says the mathematics major).
More importantly, what's the standard deviation? -Engineer
15 for the whole population. Apparently this is the top of the someones list and these STEM fields are grouped in ~1/2 of a std dev. On an individual test the margin for error is around +/- 3pts. Since the numbers above are averages the error should be less, but the std dev per field is probably still enough that there will be some biologists scoring above some physicists. A list like the one above is more about the lack of non STEM fields than comparing individuals within the fields listed.
