Not sure if this is a myth, but doesn't the state provide a (medical) subsidy to parents adopting a SN child?
kids with special needs adopted through foster care do get a subsidy and Medicaid and in some states free college tuition. But private adoptions don't come with subsidies. the child will likely be eligible for SSI and Medicaid at age 18 and Social Security if the adoptive parent(s) are covered and become elderly/disabled/deceased. Some states have other programs as well. There is also an adoption tax credit that OP might qualify for.
Actually some states do extend adoption subsidies to children adopted through private agencies.
