Give me a break - do you REALLY not understand how this could possibly happen?? SIL serves pizza and cupcakes at 4:45 thinking it's an early dinner and her obligation is fulfilled. You all come over and at 5:45 you and her kids announce - still hungry. Reality is if you weren't there - a mom who has just hosted a kiddie party would've handed her kids some cheese and crackers or maybe scrambled up some eggs or warmed up last night's leftovers - nothing more complicated. But bc you mention - running to the store or ordering in, she suddenly thinks $hit they need a full meal, I can't scramble some eggs. For that kind of quick unplanned meal, most of us order pizza as our go to. Given that she just served pizza at 4:45 and you didn't eat it, she assumes you don't want that again and want a full meat + veggies kind of meal. Given that she wants to do this fast and doesn't want to cook, she probably lands at a Whole Foods or similar store - maybe it's a drive from her home, maybe parking/buying took time etc. If you and your kids were soooo flexible why did you suggest going out for food and why did you let her go? When she offered, why not say - oh no, no one wants a big meal, do you have a box of pasta/jar of sauce or boxed mac & cheese or PB&J - any of those will tide the kids over?? You were in the home of a family of 5 - no way to I believe that she had NO staple foods in the house; even when people haven't shopped, they still have a few foods around like that. This isn't a 22 yr old frat bro whose fridge consists of beer. Frankly I think she went out of her way buying prepared foods for dinner. If were her, I'd have driven to McDs and come home with a bag of big Macs and nuggets and fries. Of course then you'd complain that pizza and nuggets and fries aren't adequate offerings for YOUR snowflakes and they need veggies at every meal.
