Yes, so many elderly people love walking with their canes, walkers, and wheelchairs to go pick up groceries and coffee and lug it all back home. Sometimes it feels like all of these comments are written by people in their 30’s who have never experienced life with elderly people.[/quote]

+1. What’s funny is that it’s MUCH easier to go to stores, doc offices, grocery stores, etc in the suburbs than in densely packed cities… they are more plentiful, and you just drive straight there & park right outside.

Not in most of this country or county, that’s for sure. Old people, famous for not doing new or unfamiliar things, will not suddenly change. You have to hope that younger generations, who have exhibited a preference for living closer to walkable amenities will want what they are comfortable and familiar with when they are old, and as long as they are physically capable will continue to walk or bike for errands and such. But it’s absurd to think that people of the older generation who have lived entire lives another way can or will change. I’m also confused about at which point Arlington pivoted away from the “aging in place” mantra to the YIMBYs position of forcing the elderly out of their own homes because the most valuable real estate is being “wasted” on them.
