Anyone who thinks fcps has been silent on opioids hasn’t been paying attention. In addition to Narcan, they did so many community meetings last year, in conjunction with FCPD, trying to educate families on the dangers of opioids. Almost no one came.
I think one big issue with FCPS is that they try to put their hands into so many different pots, then flood parents with multiple emails each day, that are very long and difficult to read. Sometimes the exact same email will arrive in our inboxes from multiple school board reps, multiple schools for those of us with kids in different buildings, the superintendent and the school counselor. This is in addition to any extra emails from the counselors, college counseling staff, and possible teachers/clubs/coaches. I have had days where I receive 7 or 8 very long emails from various FCPS representatives, all saying the exact same thing just a little differently, with at least 1/3 or more of the information having zero to do with academics. Because FCPS is focusing on so many non academic things in their emails, and sending them in multiple formats from multiple people on the same day, it is SO easy to ignore, miss, or overlook the information in the emails. FCPS needs to find a better, more efficient, and more concise way to disseminate information, and limit those emails to details that are specifically focused on academics and schools. For example, the religious holiday messages in the emails are at least a paragraph of information, plus a huge clip art photo. Those should just be name - date - bullet point (1 sentence description). In a recent email, fcps posted an announcement of Native American Heritage month. It was this paragraph, plus a clip art. "Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories; and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the unique challenges they have faced historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS." The announcement could have been one sentence, put at the top of the email in the calendar swction with no clip art. They do this with so many announcements that the important stuff is just lost.
