Look, if she's sick, it's NBD. But if she's not, she needs to step up. She has a public position and has responsibilities. The First Lady doesn't just get to opt out. - Republican
"She has a public position?". WTF? she's married to the President, but she doesn't get a salary. The first lady's office gets a budget to deal with invitations and managing state dinners, but she could decline every public invitation and delegate all hostess decisions to her office staff. Do we really need the wife of the President to make flower, meal and decoration deciaions for State dinners? Fine if she likes doing it, but if not, then plenty of other people can (beside aspirational rrlatives like Ivanka). IMO, she doesn't owe the USG one bit of her time or energy. And I voted for Hillary! Twice!
Then we don't owe her seperate transport, security, residences, etc.
Melania -- as well as Baron, Tiffany, and all the other Trump children -- get their transport and residence by virtue of their close relationship with the President, which causes a security risk for them as well as a security problem for the US. They do not get these things by virtue of their position in government. The USG provides these things because if any of them were kidnapped, injured or killed, it would be a major security problem for the US.
