Sounds like you're mis-remembering pretty dramatically.  Here's a report celebrating the diversity of the NY State Bar, and it includes loads of statistics showing how there are far FEWER women and minorities as judges.  Lots more white men.  It even mentions your friend Judge Lobis, citing her as the very first gay or lesbian person elected to the civil court in NY state.
