PP here, mine was the plane ticket mention. Generally, the farther away one emigrates from, the more educated or resourced they are. Ethiopian immigrants aren't really any different in terms of education than the us population. Anyway, that community has been in Arlington for decades, longer than the recent influx of refugees from the Midwest, myself included, lol. Lots of immigrants come to this area for the same reason I did! Education and jobs. Can't fault them for that.[/quote]

Somehow I don’t think your child actually goes to school with lots of immigrants from Ethiopia and Eritrea.  Mine does. And is learning and gets lots of individual attention.  Regardless of literacy rates in these students’ developing countries of origin, I think you would be surprised how many of these families show up at schoolwide  events  or make use  of interpreters on the days they are provided to help translate report cards or at parent teacher conferences.  But yes, by all means break up existing communities where resources can easily be provided so your child can meet the “right” kind of immigrants, or preferably fewer of them, or only immigrants who make it here loaded with cash and resources, right? Where are all the Norwegians?[/quote]

Yeah, all of this. I'm a parent at a school with a population of Ethiopian students. They are killing it. That's all. I imagine their parents' country of origin did not provide the opportunities they wanted for their children. So they came here, and aren't going to squander any chances they are given. I don't think PP is a parent in South Arlington. Just another troll trying to stir up trouble. [/quote]
