I think it's just me maybe?  I buy a fair amount of groceries every week.  And I wouldn't go out of my way to pick up a bunch of fresh food that could spoil if I had a trip planned unless I specifically planned to use it in a particular meal.

Yes, the pineapple would have been a special topping for a special Christmas breakfast.  It's kind of like forgetting whether or not you bought a candle for the cake.  Or bacon to go with the eggs.  Or vodka to go in the martini....[/quote]

They didn't always have pancakes, did they?  And when they did have pancakes the kids liked to top them with their favorite fruits.  Pineapple being one of those fave fruits.

I don't find that odd. I don't remember every ingredient as long as we have some ingredients. 
Caramel sauce? As long as there were other toppings, I wouldn't give this a thought
