I also get the feeling that it’s not that Tyler’s absentminded, or that it’s just not his style to be mushy gushy.  I think he gets off by deliberately being unresponsive and ignoring her.  And manipulating her by hanging in there just enough to keep her hanging on to him.  And the more she hangs on, the more he ignores her and treats her horribly, because he gets even more thrills and power.  Classic scenario where a woman’s (or man’s) abuse slowly increases but it’s so subtle they don’t even realize it’s occurring.  And if that treatment had happened two years ago, it would have been a hell no, I’m not putting up with this shit.  But now it’s a normal pattern and they don’t have a clue.[/quote]
