Seriously, what the actual f*ck is wrong with the right wing? One after another of them getting seriously sick or killed by COVID yet they STILL don't understand or believe any of what's happening right before their own eyes. Are we having another pandemic - of mental illness? Is this brand of MAGA conservatism actually just a form of mental illness? More and more I think it is.
At this point I think not wearing a mask (and not vaccinating yourself) is like a symbol that you belong to the tribe. And it’s way past the point of no return. It’s getting to the point where I don’t even want to visit red counties any more. It’s way too dangerous. I was in a fast food restaurant in Trump country recently and was the *only one* wearing a mask (including the employees) and I absolutely stuck out like a sore thumb. For a moment I honestly thought that they would refuse to serve me. People in these areas are under *tremendous* peer pressure to conform. I really think COVID is going to spread like wildfire in these deeply conservative areas.
My daughter and I were in Kentucky in late July. We went into a Moe's and were the only customers in line wearing masks. The guy behind us looked at us and then asked the worker, "Are we required to wear masks again?" Everywhere we went, it was same story - Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia - we were almost always the only ones wearing masks indoors. I know I live in a highly educated, highly liberal bubble in my county, and frankly, I am glad!
I live in north east Ohio and my county is over 70% vaccinated and most people are voluntarily wearing masks. Don’t generalize.
I was not in northeast Ohio. I was in southern Ohio and then southwest Ohio, then Columbus to Zanesville. Even in Whole Foods in outside Columbus, we were one of only a few wearing masks. This was the end of July. It might be different now. I live in a county that is 82% partially vaccinated (79% partially) and lots of mask wearing, but my state is in the bottom half of vaccination rates. When I leave my county, it is a whole different story with masks.
