How do you people not understand that it is the diagnosis rates that have changed, not the prevalence? This is so basic. 40 years ago kids who today would be called “neurodivergent” were just left undiagnosed, unsupported, and untreated. It was a sink or swim world and they either sucked it up and killed themselves working ten times harder for a fraction of the result, or they drowned. These days everyone gets an IEP, medication, therapy, and a there’s a whole industry around diagnosing everyone’s different learning styles and selling them often bogus “therapies” that 40 years ago were treated with bullying, character assassination, and corporal punishment.
I half agree with you. Clearly, there is an industry in selling bogus therapies. But I disagree with you that it's just a change in diagnosis. I can see why you assume that, and it feels like it might be true. But, at least in the case of autism, the numbers are just surging. If I didn't have the experience of being an autism parent, I would assume that it's just really easy to get an autism diagnosis these days. Actually, the opposite seems to be true. Talk to any autism parents and they'll tell you about how hard it can be to get the requisite appointments needed to get a diagnosis. Or compare the DSM-IV and DSM-V to see how the diagnostic criteria have gotten more demanding. Despite these factors, the rates surge. Whatever your views on Kennedy, society owes it to our children to figure out what it is and how to treat it.
