The whole circle of Jen's internet bestie clutch is grifty and narcissistic.  Jamie is more narcissistic, and Kristen has tamped down on the shiling. But I looked up Sarah Goodfellow's IG (I used to follow her blog when they were in Peru) and she linked an article her daughter Riley wrote for the college paper.  She details her semester in Spain, where she suffered severe anxiety because they would not honor her pronouns of they/them.  
How self-centered do you have to be to live like this?  
Also, as someone who studied abroad in college, you don't go into the situation thinking like that.  You go abroad to learn about other cultures and other ways of living life.  It's not about how the rest of the world is going to treat or react to you (although, as an American, you better be prepared to answer questions about US politics on occasion) 
Also, the Goodfellows talk about how they lived for 5 years in Peru, but from their blog, I remember them taking frequent furloughs back to the States.  Like they were spending 1/3 of their time back home and not in Peru.
