A female osprey in Montana whose nest the Cornell Lab or Ornithology has been observing for years via streaming cam stopped incubating her eggs and abandoned the nest a week ago. Today a raven came by and took the eggs.

It turns out that the male osprey, who's responsible for feeding her and the chicks had taken up with another female a mile away, and wasn't bringing any food at all. He'd only show up once in a while to copulate.

Although the female is a devoted and experienced mom who's raised somewhere around two dozen chicks or more during her long life (virtually all of them with another male that died) and a fierce huntress who can catch prey within minutes of leaving the nest, her offspring would almost certainly be doomed to dying from hypothermia or predation if she had to leave them in the early weeks to go fish.

Last year, the male was such a poor provider that two of her three chicks died of starvation, the second one slowly and excruciatingly.
