A much younger second wife will use the old man while it suits her and then ditch him when he needs elder care. My sister’s FIL (first wife died when his kids were young) put her kids, his step children, through college when their dad wouldn’t help out and then his second left the minute he was diagnosed with an ailment that affected his ability to continue his previously lucrative career. My sister and BIL are providing the elder care. His former step kids, who lived with him from ES through early adulthood, don’t even speak to him now that he’s of no use to them. First wives take note: when you’re done having kids insist upon a vasectomy! It’s not foolproof, but it makes a second family diverting attention and resources away from your children less likely.
