Question for the team here: -Should youth players train/play multiple positions, equal time or should a coach tie them into one area during practices/games? Thoughts on development and pro vs cons? GO!
Both - Players, especially under 14 and 15 should learn to play multiple positions for a number of reasons. Only once they get into the 13/14/15 age group should you start to "specialize". This allows you to not only understand all the positions on the field but also understand where you need to play as part of your "regular" positions. You can't understand a person until you walk a mile in their shoes - same construct applies here. You need to play everywhere on the field as a younger player to fully understand the game. With that being said, you will still find that your player may find themselves in a position more often than not because of their current skill set. But as we go from 7v7 to 9v9 to 11v11 those positions and skills will change drastically. Some of the best attackers in the world started as defenders.
Agree. What soccer skills or characteristics: best dribbler: most accurate kicks; best passer/assists; agility and stamina would best fit into which specific positions? For example, the best dribbler with foot skills and passing should be CM? Kickers, decent dribblers, very fast should be left and right wings? Any thoughts?
