I have said it on here before. Prep's lacrosse program was the best in the area for years. Their supporters were very vocal to tell other programs they were nothing compared to the Little Hoya's. I had to hear it all the time at places in Bethesda or up on the DC side of Connecticut Ave in CC or Cleveland Park. Then, SJC took off and beat them and then continued to beat them. Suddenly, Prep people lost their minds and began to roll out every criticism they could at SJC. The most amusing was the Kevin Plank stuff. I always found that funny since Kevin was a Prep student until they kicked him out with two others guys and they all ended up at SJC. Prep is not a bad lax program, but their backers have a hard time dealing with SJC rising in the lacrosse rankings and overtaking them. Prep has hung its athletic success on the lacrosse shelf for years. They liked to hold that over the WCAC since they sure couldn't do it with football/basketball or baseball. There is a reason Prep won't play GZ in football anymore. Or should I say, there is a reason GZ won't play Prep. Its not competitive for GZ.
Neutral Observer Here: Long a time fan of area HS lacrosse so allow me to provide some history... Landon's program has been one of the best in the area for decades. Prep came along under Giblin and they battled it out for years for DC supremacy, then DeMatha cam to the mix under Coach Dick Long. Gonzaga became the new kid on the block under Casey O'Neil, then Waters at PVI. Bellistri has always been at Bullis but was an assistant coach and never the HC until 2015. Bullis really began garnering national attention once Bellistri took them over. In the past 5 years, I'd make the argument Bullis has been the best and most consistent program in the DC area, always top of the IAC, and battled it out with Gonzaga from the WCAC. Both Prep and Landon have had a few head coaching changes since both Bordley and Giblin left. Urick, now in his 6th year at Prep seems to have settled as Hoyas are loaded this year. McGettigan is in year 2 at Landon I believe. I believe King is also in year 2 at Gonzaga. After a rough first season, Gonzaga seems back to their usual ways (top of the WCAC) and contending with national caliber programs. Speaks has now been at SJC for 5 years, you have to give him credit, he has established SJC as a national power. You don't have to agree with their approach but they are clearly doing something right at SJC and it's a good thing for DMV lacrosse.
